Daneri Mortuary

Daneri Mortuary is a mortuary in Jackson, California, serving families in Amador County and the surrounding Sierra Nevada foothills region. The mortuary offers burial services, cremation services, funeral and memorial services, pre-need planning, and human composting through a partner provider.

Founded in 1902 by John James (J.J.) Daneri, the business began as the Amador Undertaking Parlor in Sutter Creek, which Daneri purchased at age 21 from its prior owner. J.J. Daneri had entered the funeral industry seven years earlier, at age 15, working at the same parlor. In 1930, he partnered with his son, J. Franklin Daneri, to form J.J. Daneri and Son Mortuary, relocating the primary operations to Jackson and consolidating the Sutter Creek business into the new location. J.J. Daneri also served three terms as Amador County Coroner, a role that remained tied to the private mortuary operation until the business was sold out of the Daneri family in 1972. The mortuary has operated continuously under the Daneri name through subsequent ownership, passing to Gregg and Nancy Johnson in 1983, then to Michael Johnson — son of Gregg Johnson — in 2005. The facility is believed to occupy a building with roots in the former Amador Sanitarium, associated with the old Amador County Hospital. Historical records indicate the mortuary was among the first in the area to feature motorized funeral equipment, a dedicated chapel, and a showroom.

The facility includes a chapel, identification viewing space, and private viewing accommodations. Daneri Mortuary operates in partnership with Sunset View Cemetery, which came under common management in 1988, providing coordinated care from the mortuary through final placement. Human composting is available through a partner provider.

Daneri Mortuary does not operate an on-site cemetery or on-site crematory. Pet cremation is not offered.
