The Island Funeral Home & Crematory was founded in 1981 by Allen and Nancy Richardson as the first funeral home established on Hilton Head Island; prior to its opening, island residents traveled to Beaufort, South Carolina, or Savannah, Georgia, to access funeral services. The building was designed in a Lowcountry architectural style at the Richardson family's specific direction, and the completed structure earned a national recognition for the local contractor responsible for its construction. In 1983, the business added an on-site crematory, becoming the first cremation provider on Hilton Head Island. The National Funeral Directors Association has recognized the firm with its Pursuit of Excellence Award six times.

The facility includes multiple chapels, reception and event space, private viewings, identification viewings, a cremation viewing suite, and a Tahara Room.
