Ullrey Memorial Chapel is a funeral home with an on-site crematory in Yuba City, California. Founded in 1942 by Sutter County Sheriff Bert M. Ullrey and his son Burwell William Ullrey — who served as Sutter County Coroner from 1942 to 1958 — the chapel has operated continuously from its original Downtown Yuba City location for more than eight decades. Core services include burial services, cremation services, funeral and memorial services, pre-need planning, and human composting through a partner provider.
The chapel's founding family held prominent roles in Sutter County civic life across multiple generations. When the catastrophic 1955 Feather River levee failure triggered one of the most destructive floods in California history, co-founder Burwell William Ullrey was the sitting county coroner and the primary official responsible for managing recovery, identification, and processing of flood fatalities in the area. Walter Ullrey joined the family business in 1946 as a funeral director and embalmer and remained active in that role for nearly six decades. A third generation entered operations in 1970 when Burwell Leigh Ullrey joined the chapel, followed by a fourth generation in 1981 with the arrival of Damon Ullrey.
The chapel's facility includes a dedicated chapel space, an on-site crematory, and private and identification viewing rooms. Among the chapel's historically significant holdings is a fully restored vintage Eureka Cadillac coach recognized as the only known surviving example of that specific model built on a Cadillac chassis. Following a restoration spanning more than two and a half years, the vehicle is considered a nationally recognized piece of funeral transport history.
Human composting is available through a partner provider. Ullrey Memorial Chapel does not operate an on-site cemetery. Pet cremation, licensed grief therapy, and legal or estate planning services are not offered.
Families consistently note the staff's ability to manage complex arrangements with calm, attentive follow-through — particularly in situations requiring coordination across multiple logistics.
