Willwerscheid Funeral Home & Cremation Service was founded in 1886 by John Adam Willwerscheid, a second-generation American, making it one of the longest-operating funeral home businesses in St. Paul. The firm expanded through four generations of the Willwerscheid family, operating under successive names including J.A. Willwerscheid & Son, Willwerscheid and Son, and Willwerscheid & Peters Mortuary before adopting its current name in the early 1980s to reflect the growing role of cremation services. The Grand Avenue location has been in continuous operation at its current address since at least the mid-20th century. The building was specifically designed to feel residential in scale, with architectural elements intended to create an elegant, home-like environment rather than a conventional commercial facility.
The facility includes multiple chapels, reception and event space, and dedicated areas for identification and private viewings.
